A tropical holiday in Mauritius

A tropical holiday in Mauritius

Upon descent into Sir Seewoosagar Ramgoolam International airport you can already take in a vista of the gorgeous tropical island of Mauritius. White sandy beaches and rugged lush mountains with endless fields of waving sugar canes make for an appealing castaway landscape.

On first encounter of the island you really get the feeling of warm and friendly locals who live the island dream. Although local life seems to take on a laid back “island time” pace, the attentiveness, efficiency and professionalism shown by leading resort staff is of a high calibre but still with the local friendly nature.

The East coast of the island offers some fantastic well established resorts and the iconic white sand paradise island of Ile aux Cerfs, which is a popular getaway with tourists and locals alike. A scenic drive from the airport up to the eastern resorts, with the sugar cane fields on one side and the expansive blue ocean on the other, the Easterly winds offer a refreshing breeze in the hot climate on this side of the island.

Traveling across the island to the north west, en route is Pamplemousses; The Botanical Gardens of Mauritius. The gardens are an ideal place for nature lovers to explore, with giant water lilies and towering rows of palm trees; everywhere you look there are so many different plant varieties to see. It is best to hire a local guide to get the most out of your visit. If flora is not to your taste, the gardens also offer fauna attractions in the form of Javan deer and giant tortoises, which are to everyone’s delight.

Continuing on it is easy to then proceed to the bustling capital city of Mauritius; Port Louis. In the centre of town you have the busy and lively streets surrounding the market, offering local spices, clothing, souvenirs, fish, fruit, vegetables, in contrast to the newer Caudan Waterfront area offering a slower pace with designer shops, restaurants and harbour views. One of the highlights for the
locals is the horse race track which is heavily visited from May until November.

The West coast landscape offers flatter areas on the immediate coastline with a sharp contrast of steep mountain scenery inland. The Flic en Flac area is really starting to develop, with more tourist facilities offering a selection of restaurants, shops and bars and is a quieter alternative to that of Grand Bay.

This is just a taste of what it is like to experience delicious Mauritius. For more information or to have a package tailored to your specific needs contact our Mauritius experts on 1800 047 047.
