Holiday in Oman - 6000 years of history and culture
The Sultanate of Oman is the home of Frankincense and Myrrh, legends of Sinbad the Sailor and Queen of Sheba. Steeped in 6000 years of history and culture, this country has a stunning mountainous landscape and has a 1700 kilometres pristine coastline.
Sailors and merchants from all the great civilisations moored their ships loaded with gold, precious stones, incense, shimmering cloth, and spices and turned Muscat into a large emporium which is still evident today. Much of the city’s rich history and heritage has been preserved, including remnants of the city original clay wall gates.
No visit to Muscat the capital is complete without a visit to a Souk; the Muttrah Souk is the oldest and is open all year round. Be prepared to barter as you walk through the labyrinths of tightly packed narrow lanes which sell pure Arabic exotica, gold, silver, textiles, pottery and dates.
Recommended is a day trip to the ancient capital of Nizwa to see the Fort, just 90 minutes fromMuscat, to the Western Hajar Mountains. If you are there on a Friday be sure to see the fascinating livestock market.
In November, Advisor Julie Richards spent 10 days experiencing the major sites of the country using the acclaimed Chedi Hotel in Muscat as a base for my various sightseeing options.
The best period to visit is between October and April when the average temperature is around 30 Degrees. Etihad fly’s daily non stop toAbu Dhabi from Sydney, 14 hours with an hour flight toMuscat.
