Cruising the Kimberley in Style, Western Australia
Cruising the Kimberley in Style, Western Australia
The King George River falls are the highest single-drop falls in the whole of the Kimberley, gushing from 100 metres above your head. But during dry season, the raging waterfall is reduced to a trickle so slight that you can glide right underneath it after an optional hike, and sip a cool glass of champagne in its shadow.
Such is the kind of indulgence you’ll experience on the five star luxury liner, Orion, during this ten-day sightseeing cruise from Darwin to Broome. It’s one of the best cruises in Australia.
The trip includes an optional flight over the Bungle Bungles in a light, eight-seater aircraft. Gazing down at the beehive formations standing tall like 60s hair-dos is humbling enough, and that’s before you’ve clambered over a crashed aircraft enroute to the ancient Aboriginal Bradshaw art on the underside of a hanging cliff. This trip is not for the faint-hearted.
Montgomery Reef, one of the most significant and bizarre tidal movements in the world, rising like Atlantis from the ocean at regular intervals, is the sight for spotting turtles. If you don’t manage to spot a passing black tipped reef shark, too, you may just find a different, bubbly sort of surprise waiting for you on your return journey. Orion’s staff know how to keep the treats coming.
Back on board, a different themed dinner each night gives you the chance to mingle with fellow adventure-loving passengers. You can dance the night away in the Galaxy Lounge, partake in some trivia or just take an evening dip in the onboard Jacuzzi. This state-of-the-art ship only caters for up to 100 passengers, so a ten-day cruise carries the feeling of a stay in a small hotel, where it seems perfectly possible to make lifelong friends.
If you like your adventure trips dripping in decadence, there’s no better way to see the spectacular gorges, waterfalls and caves that constitute The Kimberley, one of Australia’s best holidays and an utterly magical wonderland.
