Cuban Explorations
Cuban Explorations
Exotic rhythms, palm-fringed beaches, the home of revolutionary Che Guevara and the heady smell of Havana cigars. It has to be Cuba. If you’re looking for luxury in Caribbean, you don’t have to look very far.
The Santa Isabel Hotel, built in the 18th century, is the grandest of Old Havana’s hotels, and stands majestically on the eastern side of the city’s oldest and most stunning colonial square, the Plaza de Armas. Santa Isabel was the first pick for visiting artists, merchants and well-to-do travellers from 1867 onwards and has since lost none of its charm.
Taking its cue from traditional colonial houses you’ll find elegant furnishings, towering columns and all the comforts of a modern hotel, without the gym or swimming pool. Take a step back in time with a few nights in the centre of the action and salsa your way from Santa Isabel into the night.
If the smell of those cigars is igniting a sense of intrigue, explore the tobacco plantations. Vinales is well known for its quality and there are many plantations operating via traditional techniques that haven’t changed for centuries. For something different you can even take a tour through the Vinales Valley on horseback.
Feeling the heat? Head underground and work you way around Cueva Del Indio, a beautiful cave that was discovered in 1920. Explore it on foot and discover the astonishing underground San Vicente River towards the end of your tour.
Jazz, tango, salsa, you can’t come to Cuba without experiencing its vibrant music scene first hand. Jazz Café in La Rampa offers live music every night and is the most famous Jazz Club in Havana. It buzzes with locals and visitors alike, all looking to spot the best new talent in Cuba and is one of the best places in town to try an infamous mojito. A couple should get the toes tapping.
