Slip out of the city and quickly into the epic landscapes of Great Dividing Range valleys that are blanketed in eucalypts and brimming with Australian wildlife.

Accommodation at Wolgan Valley lends itself to intimate privacy and convivial gatherings alike. Architecturally, the colonial-style suites evoke the raw beauty of the Australian bush and inside it’s all plumped comfort on leather sofas around gas-burning fireplaces, indulgent bedrooms and slate bathrooms. Every suite has a private heated plunge pool. Take several. They are close enough for easy socialising and sensibly distanced to maintain some necessary privacy.

The three Wollemi suites are ideal for a family or a multi-generational retreat. Each has two bedrooms, two ensuite bathrooms plus a living area. Moody escarpments and expansive valley vistas are the heart-stopping setting for these suites. The Wolgan suite is really a self-contained lodge with two oversized bedroom suites plus staff quarters that can double as a third guestroom. Private terraces, a pool and a gourmet kitchen are everything a small group would find satisfyingly indulgent.

Two excellent restaurants serve contemporary Australian cuisine but if seclusion is the raison d’être of a group, fine dining is easily arranged in a private dining room or in your own suite. Otherwise a unique al fresco location can be organized for either for a gourmet picnic lunch or dinner under the stars.

Importantly for families and groups, there’s a full daily schedule of activities, including horseback riding, hikes and four-wheel-drive “safaris”. Wolgan’s dedicated team of guides can often conjure up numerous wildlife sightings and safaris end with sundowners on a hilltop deck overlooking the property. A narrated after-dinner stargazing session will enthrall any age group, whilst sipping a first-rate local tipple is strictly for the grown ups.

Paul’s opinion is that Wolgan Valley is the best venue for a house-party with trimmings for those who yearn to indulge themselves in iconic Australian landscapes.
