Dinosaur hunting: A prehistoric holiday to remember
If living like Fred Flintstone has always intrigued you, you’ll be pleased to know there are ways to spend your precious holidays stepping back in time to the Stone Age, to an age when dinosaurs roamed the land. We’re not exactly talking Jurassic Park, but here’s how to hunt dinosaurs all over the world on your holiday.
Dinosaur Provincial Park, Canada
The Dinosaur Provincial Park, just two and a half hours by car from Calgary in Canada, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Renowned for being one of the richest locales for dinosaur fossils in the world, the park attracts thousands of visitors every year, all hoping to be there when dinosaur species number 41 is found (they’ve found 40 different species so far).
In the museum on site, you’ll get to see the fossil assemblage of almost 500 species of life, ranging from large flesh-eating dinosaurs to microscopic fern spores. Our travel specialists will be happy to recommend luxury accommodation near the park or in Calgary.
El Parque Cretácico, Sucre, Bolivia
Just 40 minutes from beautiful Sucre in Bolivia, you’ll find the largest paleontological site in the world. Parque Cretácico hosts one of the biggest sculptures on the planet – a Titanosaurus measuring 36 metres by 18 metres. That should satisfy your craving for taking that “Look, I’m being chased by a giant dinosaur!” photo.
Overlooking a limestone wall filled with over 5000 authentic dinosaur tracks, Parque Cretácico makes for a fascinating day out on your holiday to Bolivia, and there’s a pleasant walk though a garden filled with geraniums if you get a bit scared of all the dinosaurs. Zhucheng Museum, China
Some 7600 fossils, many over 100 million years old, have been discovered in Zhucheng, China, in the Shandong province on the country’s eastern coast. It’s been an important place for excavation of dinosaur remains since 1960 and most of the fossils uncovered date from the late Cretaceous period.
If you don’t know your oviraptors from your sauropods, your stegosaurs from your hadrosaurs, Zhucheng is the place to learn. See our travel specialists for accommodation options.
Australian Age of Dinosaurs, Winton, Australia
A new dinosaur bone-bed was recently discovered at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs in Queensland, Australia, which has excited thousands of visitors looking to get involved.
If you long to take part in an actual dig and uncover some bones for yourself, here’s your chance to join the team and use professional tools in the biggest fossil preparation lab in the Southern Hemisphere. You can visit for a week or just a day, depending on how much time you have. But however long you stay, seeing a previously undiscovered dinosaur come out of its tomb after 100 million years is something you will never forget.
