Wonderful waterfalls of the world

Feeling the power of a gushing waterfall can thrill even the most complacent traveller as there’s nothing quite like standing – or swimming – in the face of Mother Nature at her finest. Waterfalls all over the world have long been attracting holidaymakers. Here are some of the best the planet has to offer.

Big and bold: Iguazu Falls

Straddling Brazil and Argentina, the mighty Iguazu Falls attracts thousands of tourists every year in both countries, although the best sights are arguably in Argentina. Roughly half of the river's powerful, gushing flow tumbles loudly into a narrow chasm named the Devil's Throat.

The Iguazu National Park is well worth getting up early for, when crowds will be at a minimum and you can get your photos in the spray of the falls themselves. The falls can be accessed from the two main towns on either side: Argentina’s Puerto Iguzu and Brazil’s Foz do Iguacu. Ask our expert travel specialists to recommend some luxurious accommodation options to suit your itinerary.

Larger than life: Victoria Falls

The largest waterfall in the world, the impressive Victoria Falls is a sight not to miss at the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. This spectacular scene is most impressive in the light of a full moon, when a ‘moonbow’ can be spotted in the spray instead of a rainbow.

If you’re planning a romantic proposal, or just to blow someone’s socks off, this would be a great time to visit. During the flood season it’s impossible to see the bottom of the falls from the top, as much of it is covered in mist. Our travel specialists will advise the best time to visit and help arrange a place to stay in the vicinity.

Most visited: Niagara Falls and Yosemite

Between the USA and Canada, the monstrous Niagara Falls has been attracting eager tourists for years, all keen to get below the falls on the infamous Maid of the Mist boat ride, during which you’ll have to don an attractive blue waterproof poncho.

Niagara has the highest flow rate and a scary vertical drop of over 50 metres. Don’t forget the camera. Alternatively, on the west coast of the US, Yosemite Falls is one of the highest waterfalls in North America. A visit makes for one of the most spectacular sights you’ll ever see.

Most uninterrupted: Angel Falls

If you’re heading to Venezuela, you will not want to miss the world's highest uninterrupted waterfall, Angel Falls, which has a dizzying height of 979 metres and an 807-metre plunge. You’ll find the falls in a beautiful but isolated jungle and you can speak to our experienced travel specialists about taking a river trip between June and December, which is when the rivers are deep enough to host the wooden curiaras steered by the Pemon guides. You can’t fail to have a cultural – and pretty wet – experience in Venezuela.
