African Safari - Plains of the Masai Mara
This safari is a highly personalised experience and includes highlights such as a visit to the gallery of a local artist in Nairobi and a chance to meet some Masai villagers.
Sample Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive Nairobi (D)
A welcome to the safari capital of Kenya. This evening visit the home/gallery of a local Nairobi artist to view their works over a glass of wine. Continue to Talisman for dinner then overnight in Nairobi.
Day 2: Nairobi – Samburu (B,L,D).
This morning transfer to the airport for your flight north to the Samburu National Reserve. On arrival transfer to your small, luxurious, tented camp set in lush lawns on the bank of the Uaso Nyiro river. This afternoon enjoy a game drive through the park (B,L,D).
Tented camp accommodation.
Days 3 – 4: Samburu (B,L,D)
Over the next two days explore the Samburu National Reserve, situated on the banks of the Ewaso Ngiro River in the dry northern reaches of Kenya. The presence of the river - and its shady trees - attracts plenty of wildlife: giraffe, buffalo, waterbuck and zebra from the surrounding savannah plains trek to the water to drink. Lion, leopard and cheetah are also quite easy to spot, thanks in part to the lack of grass cover. Samburu is also home to large herds of elephants, and the reserve is well known for providing the opportunity to see wildlife that only lives in the dry north of Kenya. For birders, around 365 species have been recorded and the river area is particularly rewarding. There are birds and vervet monkeys everywhere and dik diks wander freely around the camp. From the animal viewing platform in the trees you can also scan the vast Samburu plain.
Tented camp accommodation.
Day 5: Samburu – Masai Mara (B,L,D)
Fly south to the endless plains of the famous Masai Mara. The wide open spaces lend themselves to game viewing, which is why this reserve is one of the most well regarded for wildlife in all of Africa. This afternoon take a game drive in a specially adapted 4WD vehicle. Prepare to be amazed. This evening relax on your verandah with its unique view of the Mara river and watch the varied wild animals that come down to drink (B,L,D).
Tented camp accommodation.
Days 6 – 7: Masai Mara (B,L,D).
The Masai Mara is a photographer’s dream with lion, elephant, buffalo, cheetah and the graceful Maasai giraffe. Spend the next two days on safari with morning and afternoon game viewing activities. The vast rolling hills of the Masai Mara make spotting game a little easier, with lion, cheetah and elephant all resident in the area. Whilst here you are invited to participate in a tree planting project.
Tented camp accommodation.
Day 8: Masai Mara – Nairobi (B)
This morning depart the Masai Mara and fly back to Nairobi.
