Stephanie’s top 5 hotels in the world
1. Sukhothai in Bangkok:
Guestrooms and suites are situated in acres of gardens, pools and lotus ponds and all are furnished with Thai silks, teakwood, marble and mirrors. This hotel eschews over-the-top glitz and is an iconic beacon of elegant restraint. This is a retreat that takes the edge off any harried traveller, particularly in a city like Bangkok that never pauses for breath. You can take refuge from the frantic streets in the cosseting rooms or get straight down to lounging by the yummy pool.
2. Amanjiwo in central Java:
A breathtaking echo of the ancient temple complex of Borobodur which it faces, this architecturally striking complex cossets guests in jaw-dropping and luxurious quietude. It abuts acres of lush Javanese farmland, offers suites of spacious privacy and endless private and public pools, but never obscures its focus on the cultural heart and soul of Java in whose image it was created.
3. Imperial New Delhi:
In the past decade it has undergone the most remarkable transformation from a shabby old favourite to one of the most outstandingly attractive and appealing hotels in the world. The artworks and creative treatment of this colonial gem now stands as a testament to the great designs of Lutyens when modern New Delhi was on the drawing board. It is a sumptuous oasis of calm in the chaos of Delhi and literally sings about the colonial roots of many of the cities buildings.
4. Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong:
Bliss is the byword in its luxurious, harbour-facing rooms and it is matched by the stunning views and champagne cocktails of the buzzy M Bar on the 25th floor . Privacy screens offered to celebs having a haircut in the salon are worth making an appointment to see! Best of all are the talents of the concierge who can often secure tables at sought after restaurants and clubs.
5. Amansara in Siem Reap:
This decadent but delightful retreat is straight out of the stylish elegance of the 1950′s. You get an inkling of its Grace Kelly ambience when a vintage Mercedes, (vertical dashboard intact) – arrives to spirit you away from the airport. The black tiled, central pool lends an air of life à la Hollywood royalty and it is no surprise that the world’s A listers chose to stay within its high walls for chic privacy.
